Technology is helping contractors gather data at the jobsite to make more informed decisions, improving productivity, safety and the bottom line.
LBX Company is offering two factory-installed grade control technology options for North American 210 X4 customers. The Link-Belt 2D Machine Guidance (MG) system provides an operator with visual and audible indication when they are above, below or at their desired target grade. The Link-Belt 2D Machine Control (MC) system provides the operator with not only visual and audible indication when they are above, below or at their target grade, but can also control the boom and bucket while the operator controls the speed of the stick to maintain a consistently smooth flat or sloping surface. The 2D MG and 2D MC options enable operators to increase their productivity by up to 50 percent by providing them with the information they need and the functionality they've never had before.
Construction industry software developer HCSS has opened registration for its fourth-annual $50,000 Construction Intern Awards scholarship program for students in construction-related fields. Drones continue to be a growing part of the construction industry, and efforts to collect and process the data collected by unmanned aerial vehicles have expanded with the release of new tools by solutions provider Airware. Designed around a secure, cloud-based platform, Airware leverages machine learning and artificial intelligence to help quarries digitize their business and improve operations with visualization, collaboration, analysis and reporting on drone-captured data.
Bentley Systems, Incorporated has announced the acquisition of Synchro Software, headquartered in London, leader (and the market creator) in 4D construction modelling software for scheduling and project management. Synchro, "construction's time machine," has been globally adopted, in particular, for building and civil infrastructure projects. The acquisition broadens Bentley's ProjectWise construction offerings – which already include ConstructSim, for 4D construction modelling in project delivery of industrial plants. With construction project management in 4D, benefits of BIM can extend throughout infrastructure project delivery and asset lifecycles, as traditionally disconnected workflows become digital workflows.

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has been involved in a Swedish research project that demonstrated that by applying the latest technology within communication and automation, underground mines could become more efficient and safer. In the Pilot for Industrial Mobile Communication in Mining (PIMM) project, Volvo CE developed and tested its remotely controlled wheel loader 400 metres underground – while the operator commanded the machine from a comfortable office on the surface. This was made possible with the help of other companies and organizations – including Boliden, Ericsson, Telia, ABB, RISE SICS and LTU – which joined forces on the project to explore what the next generation of mobile communication technology, 5G, could mean for business models and communications in a mine.
Volvo CE held technology presentations in conjunction with the Newport stopover of the 2017–2018 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, May 17–20, 2018. The Volvo Ocean Race is a gruelling international competition in which sailing teams compete in a race around the world over the course of nine months.
John Deere has added grade guidance technology to the 210G LC excavator and made numerous other customer-inspired updates to improve productivity, uptime and lower daily operating costs on the 13 to 47 ton models. The grade guidance system provides operators with information on the bucket's location with respect to a 2D reference or 3D design surface and is ideal for digging trenches for pipe, shaping ditches or slopes, or digging structure foundations. The system was developed in cooperation with Topcon.
